Sheryl Monks, Freelance Editor & Writing Coach

Who will edit my work? What kind of experience does she have?

Sheryl Monks is the former co-owner and editor of Press 53, an independent literary publisher which she helped to establish in Winston-Salem, NC. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Queens University of Charlotte and a BA in English from Salem College. She is an award-winning, published writer as well. Her fiction has earned a Northwest NC Regional Artist's Project Grant and the Reynolds Price Short Fiction Award, among others. Her short stories and interviews have appeared in RE:AL--Regarding Arts and Letters, Backwards City Review, Southern Gothic online, Surreal South, Fried Chicken and Coffee, Night Train, storySouth, the Writer's Chronicle, and other publications. She is the author of a book of folktales, Ghostly Lighthouses from Maine to Florida, which she wrote as a special assignment after an internship with John F. Blair, another publishing company located in Winston-Salem.

As an intern at John F. Blair, Sheryl reviewed manuscripts under consideration, proofread galleys, and worked under the direction of the Editor-in-Chief.

During her tenure at Press 53, Sheryl reviewed and edited novels, short story collections, memoirs, and poetry books. She worked with a number of both well-known and emerging writers. In addition to editing, she was the primary publicist at Press 53 and garnered a wealth of experience helping writers promote their work beyond the publication process.

Will you read my novel and offer suggestions?

Yes. I am currently accepting a limited number of editing projects.

I'm not sure what service I need. Do I need a manuscript review or coaching?

If you have completed a novel and are ready to revise it, I recommend a Manuscript Review. Read more under EDITING. If you are working on a novel that you have not completed, Coaching may be more helpful. Even if you have already established good writing habits, a coach will read your work-in-progress and offer suggestions that will improve your writing and help you finish your project.

How much does it cost?

Editing begins at $3.00 per manuscript page (this means double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font with 1-inch margins). For a complete price list, see EDITING.

Coaching begins at $60.00 per single 30-minute session. Packages begin at $250 for 5 sessions and top out at $500 for 12 sessions. Repeat clients receive discounts.

Workshops are $35 - $50 per class.

How does Coaching work? Is 30 minutes enough time?

Before we ever begin, we'll sit down and talk about your plans and whatever fears you have about completing your project. We'll identify your goals and then set up a writing schedule designed to achieve your goals at your pace. You'll send a portion of your work 1-2 days before our scheduled conference. I will read it and prepare comments for our phone conversation before we actually speak. This way, our time is used as efficiently and effectively as possible. You'll be amazed how much we accomplish in 30 minutes.
